The battle of Shiloh (6-7 April 1862) was the definitive loss of innocence for both sides in the Civil War, and appears as a touchstone in many novels. Key generals including Grant, Sherman, Beauregard, Bragg, and Forrest were present; the Confederate commmander Albert Sidney Johnston died there; and the most literary of all generals, Lew Wallace, was a controversial figure at Shiloh.
