Lytle, Andrew. The Long Night. Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1936. In print: University of Alabama Press, 1988.
A number of frame stories surround a central episode in the life of Pleasant McIvor, who must avenge the murder of his father by hunting down the killers. In the course of exacting this revenge, Pleasant is swept up into the Shiloh campaign, and fights in the battle of 6-7 April 1862, eventually losing his cousin, his bunkmate, and his best friend in combat.
Lytle juxtaposes the havoc of war against the havoc of the vendetta in this asymmetrical and violent novel.
