Bannister, Don. Long Day at Shiloh. New York: Knopf, 1981.

English novelist Bannister presents the 24 hours of 6 April 1862 from the perspective of dozens of Union soldiers and officers. The dialogue and stream-of-consciousness passages are profane and often sex-obsessed; Long Day at Shiloh is an excellent example of the kind of historical novel written not in the idiom of texts from its historical period (like its models Shiloh and The Killer Angels) but in a reconstructed naturalistic idiom that could not have been printed in the 1860s (like Andersonville, another model).
