African-Americans feature in almost every Civil War novel to some extent, though too often as background characters, awkward comic relief, or brutish stereotypes. Novels that feature African-Americans as heroes or important supporting characters date from Reconstruction times and have become more and more prominent in Civil War fiction since the middle of the 20th Century. The novels listed below, by both white and black authors, have substantial African-American protagonists or major supporting characters.
