Peck, Richard. The River Between Us. New York: Dial Books, 2003.

In a frame story, a man remembers a trip he made to downstate Illinois as a child in 1916. There he met his Grandma Tilly Pruitt. The center of Peck's novel is Tilly's story of the year 1861, as her brother Noah left for war and two mysterious refugees from Louisiana -- Delphine and Calinda -- entered their lives.
