Lieutenant Christy Passford disguises himself as the servant Christophe in order to help the French detective Gilfleur ascertain the comings and goings of Rebel blockade-runners in Bermuda and the Bahamas. After a nasty run-in with Captain Flanger, whose nose Christy had shot off in Stand By the Union, Christy helps materially in scooping up several Confederate ships.
One of Adams's later Civil War juveniles, and drained of much of the humor and energy that distinguishes the earlier ones. There is much drab discussion of plots and schemes and the rights of belligerents in neutral ports, and the action is never much in doubt. (At one point a Rebel ship comes into view at the end of a chapter, fires on Christy's ship, and we turn the page for the cliffhanger to discover that the next chapter is titled "An Easy Victory.")
