Robey Childs, on the brink of manhood, is sent off by his mother to find his father, a Confederate soldier. Robey makes his way through many Cold Mountain-like adventures till he meets up with his father on the battlefield at Gettysburg; and then his troubles really start, as he manages to make several mortal enemies and to lose the last remaining scraps of his innocence.
