Jiles, Paulette. Enemy Women. New York: Morrow, 2002.

Adair Colley is growing up in southeastern Missouri late in the War, fond of horses and storytelling. When Union irregulars burn out her family and kidnap her father, Adair sets out to find him. She finds herself in a military prison for women in St. Louis, where her jailor, Union Major William Neumann, falls in love with her. The couple are separated by the War before they even really get together: will they reunite?

Written in the long shadow of Cold Mountain, but with a highly original setting and a verbally ingenious heroine; strongly plotted.
