Cornwell, Bernard. The Bloody Ground. New York : HarperCollins, 1996.

Discredited after Second Manassas, Nate starts this fourth and last Starbuck novel in command of a "punishment battalion," and with steely, desperate resolve, turns the unit into a fighting team just in time to march north to Maryland and fight at Antietam. The battle itself is very well-drawn, and this is the best of the Starbuck novels, though Cornwell, distracted by other projects, suspended the series here.
