Marching north with Stonewall Jackson's army in the third Starbuck novel, Nate Starbuck runs afoul of the alcoholic colonel Swynyard -- and then, almost worse, becomes the apple of the suddenly evangelized, teetotalling Swynyard's eye. Central to the novel is Nate's bitter conflict with his cartoonishly hypocritical abolitionist father the Rev. Elial Starbuck.
