Adams, William Taylor. [As Oliver Optic] Brave Old Salt; or, Life on the Quarter Deck: A Story of the Great Rebellion. Boston: Lee and Shepard, 1866. Out of print.

Jack Somers is now an ensign, and in the good graces of Kate Portington, the Commodore's daughter that he had fished from the drink in The Yankee Middy. All is not well, though, because a dastardly traitor is angling to get Somers to accept a Confederate commission and turn blockade-runner. Not terribly likely, but our young hero has some tense moments after playing double agent for a bit.

The title character is Admiral Farragut, a figure here of impossible gentility and chivalry. The one interesting action sequence is a depiction of Farragut's victory at Mobile Bay, drawn from contemporary accounts.
