Counterfactual Civil War Novels
All fiction is counterfactual to the extent that it imagines events that aren't or can't be documented. Much Civil War fiction, of course, prides itself on historical accuracy; bibliographies and historical prefaces or epilogues are common. True counterfactuals, however, imagine a world that did not and sometimes could not have existed; far from just recreating plausible events, they try to render the improbable believable.
