The March
Navigation Home Southern Civilians Sherman
Doctorow, E.L. The March. New York: Random House, 2005.
A disparate group of characters gets caught up in Sherman's march through Georgia and the Carolinas in the winter of 1864-65. They include escaped Confederate prisoners, free and slave women, photographers, physicians, and soldiers. Sherman himself is a major character here, though he is no less carried along by events than any of the camp followers.
