Carter, Alden R. Bright Starry Banner. New York: Soho, 2003.

Carter sets out to do for the 1862-63 battle of Murfreesboro (Stones River) what Michael Shaara did for Gettysburg in The Killer Angels: provide a comprehensive battle narrative with plenty of characters from all ranks of both armies, but with special attention to the commanding generals and their backstories. William S. Rosecrans and Braxton Bragg are thus among the leading characters, but a Union topographical engineer named Ambrose Bierce has a prominent role in Carter's narrative, too.
