Anna Sunday

Keehn, Sally M. Anna Sunday. New York: Philomel, 2002.
Young Anna Sunday, dressed as a boy, and her brother Jed set out from their Pennsylvania farm to travel to the bedside of their wounded father in occupied Virginia.
A throwback to the kind of gee-whiz children's adventures that populated juvenile Civil War novels in the early-to-mid-20th century. There are semi-magical elements (including a horse that will move only when addressed with Bible verses) and plenty of gentle picaresque rogues for the children to get into minor scrapes with.
