Burow, Daniel R. Sound of the Bugle: The Adventures of Hans Schmidt. Illustrated by "Barry F. Smith and Associates." St. Louis: Concordia, 1973. Out of print.

Hans Schmidt is 13 when the Civil War begins, the son of an immigrant preacher of anti-slavery sympathies who has recently arrived to serve a Savannah, Georgia congregation. Despite his father's calling, Hans wants to be a soldier more than anything else. His father dies early in the war, serving as a Confederate chaplain; Hans's brother goes to war; but Hans himself is balked of his martial ambitions, and his adventures consist of weathering the war (including Sherman's occupation of Savannah) in the company of his family.
