Warren, Robert Penn. Wilderness. New York: Random House, 1961. Out of print.
Adam Rosenzweig, a German Jew, leaves Europe after the death of his secular, intellectual, left-wing father. He intends to fight for the freedom of the Negro, but his clubfoot prevents him from joining the Union Army. Instead, Adam joins up with a complex, unscrupulous sutler, and follows the army into the Wilderness campaign.
A notable example of the Civil War serving as backdrop for existential-hero themes.
