Deadline in Athens is unusual in being a first-person narrative, but in most other respects fits squarely into the detective-inspector tradition. Costas Haritos is middle-aged, depressed, unhappily married; he eats badly, he drinks (on occasion) too much. He verbally abuses his subordinates, and carries on a guerrilla campaign against his supervisors, who continually upbraid him for his maverick ways.
Petros Markaris' novel rings a new change on the unhappy-homelife theme, however. Haritos (at least in this first entry in the series) is not a womanizer, and not even thinking about divorce. His marriage to Adriani is another kind of guerrilla campaign, a low-level domestic warfare punctuated by reconciliations – not in the bedroom, but in the kitchen, over plates of stuffed tomatoes.
